SITUATION
Project. Staff information and mission video.
Background. Rio Tinto is at the forefront of sustainable development in world mining. By ‘sustainable
development’ the Company means we must provide for our needs today without harming the ability of future
generations to meet their needs. This is a philosophy that Rio Tinto wishes to embed throughout the business
and it began by running a pilot in its Borax subsidiary. With the project about to enter its vital and challenging
second phase, the Chief Executive wanted to address an important meeting of Borax management at their
headquarters in Boron, California. However at short notice he was unable to attend in person. The Chief
Executive’s unavailability for the Boron meeting became clear just before Christmas; the meeting was
scheduled for 9 January.
MISSION
Having established that Black Bear could complete the job in such a short timescale, Rio Tinto commissioned
us to record an illustrated video interview with the Chief Executive. Its aims were to include bringing staff at
Borax up to date with progress on the sustainable development initiative; affirming that for Rio Tinto sustainable
development is a core business value, not an optional extra; emphasizing that sustainable development is an
objective and a duty for everyone in the company; motivating staff to embrace sustainable development; and
providing a springboard for discussion at the Boron meeting.
EXECUTION
In the 2 working days available before the Christmas and New Year break, Black Bear Productions planned
and completed logistical arrangements for a production in the style of a high-end television news feature. (That
the crew and interviewer were all veterans of national television news helped ensure speed and efficiency on
the shoot.) The programme was shot, edited (incorporating music and library location footage), audio mixed,
approved by the client and delivered in master copy within 10 hours. Duplicate masters and end-user copies
were sent early the following morning to California where they arrived 24 hours before the agreed delivery date.
Despite the exceptionally tight schedule, Black Bear Productions accomplished the task within budget and
ahead of schedule to the client’s complete satisfaction. Rio Tinto’s corporate communications manager said:
‘We could give you only a very short lead-time, but this was not a problem. Budget and value for money were
excellent, as was the reaction from the programme’s target audience
